A joint project by schoolchildren from Petrozavodsk and Tübingen: the book "A Tale of True Friendship"

“The Tale of True Friendship” is a joint project of schoolchildren from Petrozavodsk and Tübingen, which resulted in the creation and publication of an illustrated book in Russian and German.

The author of the text was Boris Kudryavtsev — head of the puppet theatre of the creative center “Little Country” from Petrozavodsk. The tale tells about the adventures of the Karelian frost character Pakkaine and the German hero Nikolaus.

The illustrations for the publication were created by schoolchildren from Petrozavodsk — mainly students of the M.A. Balakirev Children’s School of Arts, class of teacher G.Yu. Ignatyeva — as well as by their German peers. A jury selected the most interesting works, which were included in the final book.

The presentation of the publication took place in the summer of 2019 in the German city of Tübingen. Young artists from Petrozavodsk — Sofia Fomina and Irina Solovyova — were invited to the event. As part of the trip, they took part in events and conducted master classes for their German peers: they taught them how to create engravings — from sketches and making printing forms to working on a special machine — and together with the German children they made cheerful gnomes out of paper plates — Nikolaus’s helpers.

For many participants, the project became an important experience: the young artists not only saw their drawings printed in a book but also personally got acquainted with the culture of another country.
